2012 Electric Cooperative Foundation Scholarship

Each year your local Electric Cooperative offers a $1,000 scholarship to one deserving area high school graduate. The scholarship is provided through the Electric Cooperative Foundation Scholarship program that was created by the electric cooperatives of Alabama in 1997.

The purpose of the program is to provide scholarships for post-secondary and vocational education for qualifying high school seniors. Only dependents of members of the local Electric Cooperative are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Applications for the 2012 Electric Cooperative Foundation Scholarship are available by calling the cooperative office or from your local high school guidance counselor beginning the week of January 9th.

Impressive Candidate vs. Admitted Student

Her story is not unusual -- stellar grades, challenging course load, strong SAT scores and recommendations, assortment of activities and community service -- applied to a dozen highly-selective institutions ("reach schools") and was rejected across the board. Adding insult to injury, Bella was also turned down by some of the "likely schools" to which she applied.
Was it a fluke? Unfortunately not. College admissions officers will tell you that gaining admission to highly-competitive schools takes more than having academic credentials that would place you in the top half of the freshman class. Intellectual curiosity, great grades and high scores are not enough. In fact, at the top schools, most academically-qualified applicants are rejected. There are simply not enough places in the entering class. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford MIT, Brown, Columbia admitted fewer than ten percent of all applicants.
So, who gets in to the most selective colleges and universities? For the most part, admitted students fall into one or more of these three categories: (1) students who can bring something "special" that the school desires; (2) those with exceptional promise; and (3) academically-qualified legacy applicants.
Most successful applicants also are perceived to have a strong interest and fit with the institution.
If you lack exceptional promise (perhaps you are not an Intel Scholar or the author of a best seller), your best strategy is usually to distinguish yourself in a manner that admissions officers may consider desirable.
Just how do you make yourself special? As a college consultant, I encourage students to focus on quality over quantity. We look for the opportunity to pursue (with gusto) one or two interesting projects, activities, and/or areas of research where the student can showcase some combination of leadership, character, determination, intellectual curiosity, talent, heartfelt interest, creativity, problem-solving and/or communication skills, maturity and ability. The "hook" should be genuine and be a good fit with the student's interests and abilities. A hook can also be developed to either offset an area of perceived weakness or to create positive differentiation.
An example of a complementary strategy would be for a student interested in engineering to pursue a project that involves motivating people and/or writing.
Your special project or activity need not be expensive or require travel. In fact some of the best projects can be pursued in the local community or via the Internet.
As an example, one of my clients was dismayed by the lack of intercultural harmony at her public high school. She endeavored to improve the situation by bringing together students to share her love for gardening. She founded a community garden project and encouraged diverse participation. She described her experiences (positive and negative) in various college application essays and was thrilled to gain admission to a number of the most selective colleges and universities.
Often, it is not at all obvious what this sort of activity or “passion” should be. There is no right answer. Rather, it takes a combination of ardent thoughtfulness and a trusted sounding board to elicit ideas that are both exceptional and sincere.
In the instances where a student has come to me as a rising senior, the challenge has been to identify and integrate an activity that hopefully has already started. It is far better to plan for this, as a sophomore or early junior year, when there is ample time to put a plan into action. This is not a guaranty of success, of course, but could be the difference between being “Admitted”, or merely being “Impressive”.

Juniors, it is never to early to start your college search. Here are some tips for you!
1. Register and take the ACT! Take it often if necessary.
2. Look for ACT prep help programs. Some of these are online and some are offered by local colleges and university.
3. Begin to pay attention to the college brochure rack by the teachers' workroom and to the posters in the hall.
4. Begin preparing a resume of your high school years.
5. Consider summer enrichment programs conducted by different colleges and universities. This gives you a chance to be on campus, participate, and meet college faculty and staff members.
6. Stay focused on your academics. Your GPA at the end of your junior year will be used on most of your college applications.

9 Point Check List After Submitting Your Application

Most students heave a sigh of relief after they click on the college application submit button.

Some of these same students find themselves in a panic when they learn that components of their application package may not have arrived at the admissions office.

As a college consultant, I advise all my clients to check the status of their application. Many schools offer applicants an easy “check status” option on their web site. If something appears to be missing, call or email the admissions office to inquire. Most of the time, there is no reason to be alarmed. Usually, the missing item(s) have been received, but haven’t yet been logged in the system.

For each school to which you apply, it’s a good idea to confirm that required recommendations (teacher evaluations and counselor’s report), transcripts and entrance exam scores, and other forms have been sent and/or received. Also make sure that you have paid the required application fee. You may be able to confirm the fee payment on your credit card web site.

Some colleges offer merit scholarships that require additional applications and essays. Check the college’s web site for deadlines and relevant information.

If you are applying for financial aid, be sure to complete the required forms and applications such as the FAFSA and CSS Financial Aid Profile. The FAFSA is an essential part of being eligible for state and federal grants. You also cannot obtain a federal student loan without filling out a FAFSA. Many schools have specific financial aid deadlines. Usually this information is available on the college’s web site.

Finally, some colleges and universities offer, suggest or require interviews. These interviews may take place on-campus or in the applicant’s local area. Often the applicant is required to take specific steps to schedule the interview. If interviews are offered, check the school’s web site for deadlines and specific requirements. Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship Awards: The Washington Crossing Foundation scholarship program awards national and regional college scholarships to high school seniors who are U.S. citizens and are planning careers in government service.

Interested students must submit a one-page essay stating why he or she plans a career in government service including any inspiration derived from the leadership of George Washington in his famous crossing of the Delaware.

All materials (including application, essay, transcript and letter of recommendation) must be mailed to the Washington Crossing Foundation and must be RECEIVED by January 15th.
